Can't install expressvu

The expressvu tech couldn't install my system today. Needed to install it on the brick chimney on the roof. Wouldn't do it because he said he doesn't work on the roof in the winter - told me to order the system in May.

I'm all about safety, but I'm disappointed. It's above 0 out.

Thats unacceptable!
Give bell a call and tell the the guys name and tell them he refused to install. If theres no snow on the roof, he should have no choice. Its his job and it seams he's not doing it. Tell bell you demand someone Come and install within the next day or 2 and if they say no, tell them you're going to take you'r service with your local cable provider or Starchoice.

The tech should have at least been able to do some kind of Temp. install:rolleyes:

I just spoke with an independent contractor who would do it.

He said it didn't need to be on the roof (and I agree - theres line of sight on the west side of the house and I asked the bell installer why it couldn't be done there - he had no real reason). The installer knows the area.

He's not part of the Expressvu "free" install, but he is certified. I'm on the phone now with Bell who said they'd credit $100 for the install that a private installer does. What do I need, just a receipt?

Off to Bell World...

I had a similar problem when I had my system installed back in Nov. I had a dish about 3 years ago and had line of sight to both 91 and 82. you could still see the holes in the wall where the dish was mounted. The installer showed up and told me that it could be installed on the brick and needed to go on my fence(which visably moved in the wind). I refused and he left saying that he would have to tell Bell that I refused to let him install the system. A week later (I only wanted and install on a Sat) another tech showed up and said, "I'll just use the existing mount holes" and I had it installed really quickly. I'm sure some of these installers that show up and don't do the install, still charge Bell for a call out and say the "customer refused to let me install the dish"

Before he does the work call Bell and tell them you are taking the system back. This will give you leverage. Insist that for you not to take the system back that you require the $100 installation credit on your account so that you can cover the cost of having a non-BEV contractor install your system. They will bend over backwards to keep you as a customer. Good luck.

I've had these types of problems with installers as well. Best thing is to get on the phone to EV/*C/whatever while they are still there. That way they have your side of the story on file first and can sometimes resolve things on the spot.

Thanks for the help and support.

I bought the 5920 - I'm excited to be able to watch GOOD programming WHEN I want to, I only had the 3100 before - (split from wife - hence being a second chance "new" customer).

Yes, they have agreed to credit the $100. They have said that I will likely get the $25 online discount taken off too because I was forced to go to Bell world to get a 2nd system. In case I didn't mention it, the installer showed up with the first system and then took it back.

The credit card should be credited for the first system because it wasn't installed - I talked to 2 agents about this and they've also advised me to write a letter to the internet site about it to ensure the appropriate action is taken.

My installer is coming either tomorrow, Friday or Saturday weather permitting in between his other jobs. He sounds like a class act, and has explained what he'll do for my money including all the little details that some installer's I've had overlooked (I had to have the last system installed 3 times because of sloppy work).

Hey, if he says there's no line of sight, I'll admit defeat, but I was very clear about what happened with him and where I am and he seemed to think it wouldn't be a problem to get at least 91, if not 82.

I'll post back with my results. Thanks for sharing all your stories - I like the story about the guy and the fence install, that takes the cake.

unfortunately, some installers out there simply don't want to do the work (not sure if they are not compensated much)...we have a couple of good installers locally around here, which was a relief, as we had more than our fair share of headaches with a large number of the idiots that were sent out to do the jobs...most of them don't want the job if it isn't a simple "20 minute slap up a dish and run a wire job".

Thanks for that dirtyjeffer.

Here's the story. As I type it I am amazed the details I remember:

He started by saying "oh you have a dish already" - there's one on the roof in use by another tenant. When I explained this he said that the dish had to be installed on the roof (into the roof) and he needed my landlords permission. Then I said that I had permission to install a satellite system here (I didn't know he would want to install it into the roof). he looked at the note and said the note didn't say specifically that it would be installed in the roof.

Then he mentions that it's not smart to install it in the roof because it sometimes leaks - that's why he wanted the landlord's permission. I said "then why is that an option" and decided there must be a better way. I have a good relationship with my landlord and he lives in the house.

The installer then changed his mind and said he would install it on the chimney beside the other expressvu dish - and asked if I had access to the roof. I told him that I requested he bring a 40 foot ladder.

His story then changed. He said he he wouldn't do it because he wouldn't walk on the roof due to the weather (+3) right now. Why was he saying "install into roof" five minutes earlier?

I don't know how it makes a difference whether he got to the roof via a ladder or walk through. He started mumbling something about the other tenants in the house seeing the wires - so I mentioned to him there was a very obvious way he could run the wires without impacting the other tenants. This wasn't good for him because he was hoping to do a "shortcut" and run my satellite wires on their deck. Now he wanted THEIR permission too, as well as the landlords to install it.

So I asked him - My options are "install into roof or install into the chimney" right? He agreed. I said "and so you won't do either of those today, right?". Right. He said to call back in May and it would be fine.

I then asked him about the entire left side of the house, which faces west - and that wasn't good for him either, but I stopped asking for his excuses. Granted there are some trees that are west of my house, but I'm almost sure there is a clean line of sight for a dish on some part of that wall. At that point I really didn't want him to install a system for me, it reminded me of the last time I had an installer do a hack job.

He called expressvu, cancelled the install and within 5 minutes - while he waited outside, expressvu called me and told me the tech wouldn't install. Gave back the PVR, and headed to Bell world.

Lets say worst case scenario, my new installer comes and says "sorry, can't do it", I'll at least have a reason, and I won't feel like I've been taken. This guy was going to come back in May and guaranteed it would work then so I'm sure there's a few places it can be installed appropriately.

Just out of curiosity, mac dude, what part of the country are you? I take it it is somewhat rural?

I will be off this afternoon waiting for My HD-PVR 9200 to be installed the will be the second afternoon this week I have taken off. Tuesday I was off and the no installer did not show up, no Phone call or anything. NOT HAPPY  So now after today I will have chewed up a full day of Vacation from work. it better come today MAN. I WANT MY HD TV. LOL funny thing is I work for Bell Aliant here in New Brunswick ( The CSR have no Idea what that is) LOL anyway I feel your Pain and I am hoping this works out today not sure what I can do if it doesn't get installed today.

BIGFREAKHD: I am sending positive vibes your way.

My install happened today. Installer got off of his job early, in and out in 1 hr this afternoon. Did all the clean up, wires are nice and neat, brick patched for leaks, called and activated the receiver for me.... excellent.

If anyone needs an installer in toronto, here's their site... Frank is excellent. Tell them Rick sent you :)

Bell gave me $125 off the install - 99 per normal and they gave me the online credit of 25 because of the first botched install (I got the second system in store - but would have got the extra money off if the guy did his job in the first place) So, I also get $150 off the PVR for buying it, so I won't have to pay for TV for a while.

I have a different account number than at first, which is good, because what I think must have happened is they closed the first account and will refund my money to the credit card.

did you install the dish yourself?
if so, call bell and tell them you moved, to your new home, and want your system set up (they will send a tech for the "free move" promo
it could be a bad sw21 switch, LNB, or just not aimed right
when you run the check switch, does it recognize the sw21?
if so, then it is most likely an aiming issue
if you aimed it yourself, did you make sure the mast/arm was level on the front and side?
if not, then aiming will be very difficult
if it was level, then you shouldnt have had to change the elevation/skew
good luck

btw on the topic of going on roofs
you have to think of the bad weather
if you put the dish on the chiminey in the summer, remember, if an LNB fails in january, you will be hard pressed to find a tech willing to risk his life, for a few bucks by climbing on an icy roof
rest assured the CSR will tell you the tech can do it no problem (they are great at gambling when it is someone elses safety/life at stake) but most techs will/should refuse working in unsafe environments, even though they are pressured to do so for something as trivial as tv........

As the previous poster suggested call us and book a move order...

They will install a new dish and the first receiver free of charge...any other receiver will get charged 50$ if installed professionnaly. To avoid beiong charged that 50$ if your are planning on having only one receiver installed tell the agent you want him to schedule the move throught OM, not OMC. Tell them to put one in the section that would ask about how many receiver will have a professional install.

When you call to make your order, since it would only be in a few days tell the agent you want to be compensated for the time that you will be whithout HD. We will calculate it on a pro rata form (10$ for the month / 30 days (billing period) * the numbers of days that you will be whithout channels). You won't get much, but better than paying for something you didn't get. Since lots of agents are too lazy to do the calculation you might end up being credited for the hole month! If you are being told that you are not entitled to a credit protest.

When you place your order don't say you re-installed the dish yourself, otherwise it will bbe considered a service call, not a move order, resulting that you willl be charged the 75$ for the tech. Say you connected your receiver throught a dish that was already there

Hi folks,

I waited until I got my new bill from Express Vu to find out if I had actually won one here. I took Agent V (thanks for the advice by the way) advice and told Bell I’d had enough and that I wanted to end my contract with them. Actually, since I was salesman most of my working life I reversed a standard closing line and began my conversation with the agent this way “Good afternoon. What do I have to do today to get out of my contract with Bell Express Vu?” I got a couple of seconds of silence (I got their attention - I thought to myself), then “one moment sir” A new person came on the phone with a totally unheard of nice attitude, at least it was an. unheard of attitude to me. I explained the problems I’d been having and reiterated my need to fire Bell. Then the offers to entice me to stay ensued. These offers also include a no-charge service call to install the upgrade dish I had and make everything perfect, which the tech did. Then three weeks later I lost satellite 91, I called, Bell had two techs here in two days and found one head was dead, they replaced it - no charge - and life has been good since then.

Anyway the gist of the story is they tripped all over themselves to make up for their previous shoddy treatment (including being overcharged in the past, techs not showing up for their appointments etc.) the bill I received in the mail this morning nearly knocked me down.-So here - for your reading enjoyment is a scan (the website didn't hold to the formating) of my bill:

I still have a $147.83 cr remaining on my bill. I guess it’s all in the way one phrases one’s complaint. It really shouldn’t be that technique is required to filter through these problems, but life is like that sometimes.

Only got a month free...

The upgrade at no charge is a current promo we could have offered to anybody....

You should have gone for more
