cant i use only magnetic sensor for compass without accelerometer

I am using a magnetic sensor in my board to get the directions for the compass application. I am updating only the x axis value (azimuth) of the magnetic sensor. The value of x is changing when I rotate the phone and the same is fed to the compass application but the needle is not getting deflected(some times it does ) and the thing to be noticed here is I am not using the accelerometer for the compass application.
Please tell me is it mandatory to use the accelerometer along with the magnetic sensor for compass application.And if it has to be used why is it necessary?

I tried the same application which is running on my phone loading to Nexus1 and it worked fine.. also if i open the application after turning the phone to some angle the needle in the compass application is moving(showing that the accelerometer is not required, or even i don know if the accelerometer apps is running back ground always whether or not the compass is running). I need to confirm whether the compass application(which should point the needle to north) requires the data from teh accelerometer also.
