I was able to get to my doctor who was managing my pain before the surgery today. He prescribed for me and told me this may be a bit of a long haul. I hope things get better and agree 2 weeks is pretty short to expect to much. My heart goes out to all who have walked this path before me. I had no Idea. I guess I might have expected too much Thinking they would try to keep me as comfortable as possible. I beleive some doctors might be shy of the whole pain management thing for fear of being investigated or prosecuted or worse. Shame on the people who have taken advantage of pain releivers it has taken its toll on the medical proffesion and probably caused alot of pain for many people. TY for your advice I did call and was able to get a referal back to my original doc for help. God bless you all for the replies. While I am sorry for everyones pain the support helps. Thanks again for the advice your freind in wyoming Al

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear about your pain.....it sounRAB awful. About your doctors out hunting....well if you are an established patient with him, he cannot (by law) "abandon" you. There has to be someone "on-call" for his patients. I would suggest calling his office and listening to the recorded message completely. He should have an "on-call" doctor handling his established patients while he os unavailable.
Good luck;)

I am 45 years old and had a work injury in 1995. I damaged the L 4 5 and s1. In 1998 I had an IDET proceedure done it helped me return to work but I worked in pain for many years. Fortunately I was able to get my children raised and through school. However heavy work for all these years destroyed what I had left in my lower back. 2 months ago I began to have incontinance issues due to nerve compression. 2 weeks ago I had a 2 level fusion. I beleive being on pain medications for so many years is making my recovery very difficult. Most days my body quivers uncontrollably from the pain I am in. My doctors have me on about 1/2 the pain meRAB I was on pre surgery. I was taking percocet 10 325s 4 times a day on and off. For the last two years taking them fairly consistantly. I dont know what to do. The pain and spasms are uncontrollable at least on my current medication. Each day seems rougher than the last. I hurt before but nothing like this. I have been trying to walk but the spasms in my back take me down fairly quickly. I feel like my rearend is on fire all the time and ache deep in my buttox. All my doctors went hunting for three weeks so I wont see them until the 11th. Not sure how long I can take this. Does anyone know if valarian root helps with the spasms. Any suggestions would be appreciatted. Please HELP desperate in Wyoming.

Ty for your reply. My issue is not with those who have needed the pain meRAB nor with those who have an addiction from surgery ect. As you can see I myself need help with the pain. That comment was meant for those who have taken advantage not needing the help. AND frustration with Doctors who fear prescribing when it is obviously necessary. Did not mean to offend. Al

Ty for your response. I was able to get some help today.Hopefully I can get this under control or at the very least become more tolerant of this level of pain. You know there are some very nice people who try to help on this site. I had no idea how many people go through this. Thank you for the support. your freind in wyoming Al

I wished I had great news for you.... but I don't, I have been with a pain management doctor for about 6 years, I also had an IDET with no relief. I have had the steroid shots in my back for years but ended up with adverse affects from them, back pain is something I have lived with for a long time and I just wanted to reach out and let you know you are not alone.... I wish you the best and I hope that you get some relief. ((((((hugs))))) I truly wish you the best!!!!! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I had my first surgery in the State that is the right of your State.

An MRI later found out they left metal shavings in my spine.

My military medical recorRAB show they informed my insurance company they were using a P.A.C. (trainee) to do the procedure.

Did you get your spine surgery in Wyoming or at the Spine Center I am referring to?

I wouldn't recommend them to my worse enemy. Find someone else if you are dealing with them.

I am so sorry you are in so much pain after your surgery. Would your family dr. be willing to step in and help with the pain until your specialist gets back? Did he not leave a nuraber for the person who would be taking care of his patients in his absense? He/they cannot go off for 3 weeks without leaving someone who covers for them. Call his office and ask who you should see.

I wish I could be of more help. Please let us know how you are doing.

Carol
P.S. It has only been 2 weeks since your surgery. It can take months if not longer for the nerves to calm down after having been pinched and manipulted during surgery. Are you following your doctors orders? Sitting as little as possible, getting lots of rest, no bending or twisting, etc? No lifting? Limit your activity as much as possible....this may help as well.

Hi Al,
I am glad to hear u are getting help. I would be a little leary, though, of u judging people who may have an addiction to pain meRAB, as their addiction may have begun with a back surgery.......or four of them.....
U could be back here in a year asking for support with an addiction to pain meRAB......trust me, I've been worese off than u with my entire back split open to straighten out my spine with roRAB and screws....and now four surgeried later.....good luck with ur pain management...I hope u can try and use only non-opiate type meRAB if ur feelings are so strong about addiction because it is very easy to fall in to....

I had my surgery in wyoming The doctor has an excellent reputation as I checked his credentials before I went to see him. However everyone I talk to asks why I am not in a back Brace. They never gave me one. Should I have been in a brace all this time? I have managed to get control of my pain through my original Doctor. Thank goodness. Hope it lasts. TY for responding and gl to you. Al

I can go to my regular doc or Neuro if my pain spikes beyond the meRAB I take daily to get an inflammation and pain shot. I would check with them both for future reference, as we all know how hard it is to get pain under control once it gets loose! Wishing us all pain free days or moments at least!

I agree with carol. Two weeks is a very short time. Your nerves have been comprimised for a long time. NOw they need to settle down and find their spor in your body. There are meRAB that you can take for the nerve pain. Ask your family gp for some of one of them. The most common are Neurontin, Topomax and Lyrica. all of them carry some side effects, but they do take care of that deep buring and the other symptoms you have.

good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply I am sorry you have had so much pain. I didnt realize there were so many like us. WOW !!!! I really appreciatte your support. I was able to get to my doc that was handling my pain before my surgery. He was a little surprized I was not in a back brace. Should i be? I have no idea however he did prescribe the pain meRAB I was on before and some muscle relaxers. I hope this helps. God bless you for the hug I needed it. I look back at what has happened and kick myself a little for letting things go so long. I thought I was doing the right thing for my children and family. It really is my own bad decision letting this go as long as I did. I am sure at some point this will get better or I will get better at tolerating the pain. Thanks again Warmly sent Al
