Can't decide between SYNC and CU500v on AT&T

I'm a current original AT&T Wireless sub and need to upgrade since Cust Service is telling me the reason my mMode and Java IM clients won't connect anymore is that the old AT&T network is being shut down. In any case, I've accepted the fact that an upgrade of my old Moto v505 is inevitable.

I hit at&t's website and was checking out their selection of phones. To be honest, I'm not overly excited about any of them but if I had to pick, I've narrowed it down to the Samsung SYNC and LG's CU500v (which is currently "out of stock"). I'm leaning toward the CU500v but digging deeper, I see it doesn't have voice dialing and I'm not thrilled about having to pay at&t another $4.95/mo. for their voice dial service just so I can use my bluetooth earpiece safely while driving without having to look down to push buttons like I do now with my Moto v505. I'm used to pushing the button on the headset, speaking a name from my phonebook and having the phone connect. Not having that is going to be a major hassle.

Does the SYNC have voice dialing built into the phone or is the CU500v that much better that I should pay the $4.95/mo. for voice dial? Or is there a better phone out there that I should consider upgrading with that has voice dial built in? I've checked out CNet's reviews and the CU500v is highly rated but the SYNC isn't far off. At this point, I'm just getting frustrated trying to find a good phone out of a sea of blah phones on their website. Back in 2004 when I got the v505 phone, it was a "cool" phone and I got excited about buying it. I'm not getting that feeling from any of the current phones on the at&t site, including the over-hyped/overrated RAZRs. Help me choose, people.

Neither of them have Voice Dialing. You have to pay the $4.95 for either phone. It's one of the major reasons I stopped using my Sync.

That being said. I've played with both phones, and to tell you the truth, I like the Samsung A LOT more than the LG. The LG seems kind of cheap to me. I don't know what it is, but it seems like it wouldn't survive 2 months with me, and I take care of my phones.

I also like Samsungs and Nokias most because of their excellent reception in poor reception areas, They will hold on to a call even if there is 1 bar. Other phones (LG especially, {with my experience}) don't....

Good luck,

Rafster

Thanks for the info, Rafster. Looks like it's back to square one putting the SYNC and the CU500v off to the side until I decide if I want to pay the $4.95/mo. for something that should be included on a phone as a basic feature, especially with all the talk about cell phone safety while driving (i.e. not trying to dial manually which totally defeats the purpose of a headset and makes no sense.)

The V3XX has voice dialing, and this phone isn't some over hyped POS like the V3. Its very good/capable phone, check it.

also

"Cust Service is telling me the reason my mMode and Java IM clients won't connect anymore is that the old AT&T network is being shut down" is not something i would believe at all...lol unless they are shutting down GPRS, but then again they are still selling phones that rely on it....

Well, you might want to try to see if you can get the Cingular Motorola V551 GPRS settings sent to your phone. That might also help, and that way you don't have to get a new phone.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. After deciding to further check out the n75 and the v3xx, I flipped a coin and the v3xx won. Actually the deal breaker was that at&t had a package deal with the v3xx for free (after $50 rebate) with any MediaMax plan. I decided to go with the MediaMax 200 $19.99/mo. plan to get free internet, free video and 200 messages (more than I really need but hey.) The kicker is that when I tried to sign up for the package deal on the website, it kept defaulting to my basket a higher priced MediaMax plan for almost twice the price. When I called customer service, they transferred me to the "internet deals" department where he signed me up over the phone, but said he could get me the phone for free after rebate and I could sign up for the MediaMax bundle after it arrived so the first bill wouldn't be such a shocker. I also talked him into sending me the platinum version of the phone, even though the website showed only the gunmetal gray version as part of the package. We'll see which one arrives since he wasn't sure he could get authorization and the shipping info says the package is for the gray phone. Shipping from FedEx is 2 days and should be here Monday (oooooooh... I can't wait that long!!!) He also gave me free shipping and waived the one time upgrade fee. The only disappointment of the whole deal was that they don't have any plans below $39.99 anymore. My current AT&T Wireless plan is $29.99 for 250 Anytime minutes and free nights and weekends/MTM. Oh well, I guess 450 with rollover for $10 more is a better deal. I'll just have to talk a lot more especially at the end of the year with all the rolled over minutes.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone that offered suggestions. You guys make this a great place to get help and info.

BTW, anybody find a cheap deal on 2GB Sandisk microSD cards? eBay seems to be the cheapest place ~ $25 with shipping and newegg.com is ~ $35 which seems a bit high. If you bought one off eBay, who is a reputable seller not pushing counterfeits? Thanks.

Oh,and thanks again rafster and zephxiii. I was on the phone with at&t technical trying to get my IM and mMode to connect for days including changing the GPRS settings. I just gave up and decided it was time to upgrade especially with nothing useful anymore on mMode and no excitement left in the v505.

Nokia N75 - $49.99 from A1 Wireless, and $49.99 loyalty rebate after 120 days.

Also, the RAZR2 V9 is coming soon, so if you haven't ordered yet, you might want to hold off a bit.
