Can't connect my desktop with siemens C211o modem with BSNL broadband connection using ethernet.......?

I always connect my desktop with siemens C211o modem with BSNL broadband connection using ethernet wire and surf internt but, iam unsuccesful in doing so for last couple of days...unsuccesful in LAN connection...while it is working well with the usb cable. My os is win7. When i'm trying to connect with ethernet my pc can't detect it. With Usb the speed is very slow.
Help please..................
