Hey yall! greetings from japan!!
anyways im a canadian living in japan and it was about time for me to change phones...Im currently using a DOCOMO Sony Ericcson 902i (Foma Stick) and it SUCKS!!!!

I come back to canada quite often and i have a canadian SIM card with a canadian phone number but my current phone cannot be used over there...
anybody have any recommendations on what phone to get which you can use both in Japan AND canada....?
i know programming the phone is key, but which ones can you program?

I was thinking about the Sharp Aquos TV phone...

The Japanese network is somewhat different in that they are on WDMA and I think it is a 2100 mhz channel. Don't quote me on that however. That tends to pose a problem with phones from other parts of the world. I have heard that a Vodaphone BB 8707 will work in the UK and Japan.

I think you'd be better off with a Canadian phone and a Japanese phone. The only issue is the number.

Japanese WCDMA is different fron Canadian WCDMA (Japan uses 2100MHz, Canada uses 1900MHz- if it's already up). However, most 3G phones come with tri-band GSM. It's a better idea to have one phone (unlocked) and two numbers (to keep all your contacts and stuff in one place). On the other hand, if you're set on the newer Softbank-branded phones (For Sharp anything newer than the 903SH/804SH, for Toshiba all their phones can be unlocked except for the 910T?, for NEC none can be unlocked) then you have to think about roaming fees.
