Canadian anime dubs

Canadian Dub Cast, Direction and Script/Translation = 50 percent CanCon. This means that in a sense, there are plenty of anime that never hit the air that would be legit to run at 50 percent CanCon. There is so much anime that fits that bill, that you could program a whole network with Ocean and Blue Water dubs, and as long as you could get the CRTC to let you get away with a 50 percent CanCon requirement (way easier said than done, but not impossible. Just not probable.)

However, the various DB series are past their prime, and unfortunately Pretty Cure has not been the second coming of Sailor Moon (which was much more successful in Canada than in the US.)

I'm assuming with all I've heard about Pretty Cure's rating, would I be correct in assuming Max Heart would not be liscenced, which I liked better than the original series, for the most part.

Well, Toei may force things along. You never know when a company might literally pay to get a show on air. Still, I think Toei was hoping for a lot more, and at this point, they'd be probably making more knocking out some sub-only, 26-episodes-a-set boxsets for the otaku audience.

I will admit I am surprised by the slightly lukewarm consensus here (but don't worry I won't bash anyone here), but still yeah I am a big fan of Ocean's VA talent. (Namely with some of its more known VA talent such as Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, Paul Dobson, Saffron Henderson, etc.) And I generally find their lesser known talent to be generally above average as well.

And when it comes to the regions for Anime Dubs my favorites are Ocean/Canada and California but I admit this might put me in the minority but I do find Ocean a bit more preferable. (Don't get me wrong I agree that California has been in some VERY exceptional material in the past but most of the stuff I have been seeing lately is generally above average.) Though to be honest I actually find Ocean to be a bit under-used nowadays (as its been said its due to the economy, but then again its been said that one of the reasons why they got more work back then was because the US/Canadian currency exchange use to work in their favor but not anymore). However for NA Animation I would deem both as equals as while Canadian VA talent has been in plenty of shows I loved such as Beast Wars, Reboot and He Man 2K2, California has an undeniable strong history in the field here.

And I also must admit that when it comes to Anime English dubs Texas and New York are pretty much tied for 3rd. Don't get me wrong FUNimation (and the late ADV) does do some very good work but I will admit I do find them to be a tad bit overrated. Not too mention ADV, in which I find their work to be generally above average (IRAB&M/ADV inhouse is generally pretty good, Monster Island not so much). And New York is rather underrated and I am glad that they are still getting some work nowadays but IMO they still do have a ways to go until they have a truly strong history.

You guys might be thinking I am a defensive fanboy here but don't worry I know that nobody is perfect. I will agree that there are Ocean dubs that are alright at best and could have been better and that the casting isn't always perfect. Though as for Canadian Voice Talent in general in retrospection I can understand the more lukewarm reception. Blue Water is not as bad as other people make them out to be but Ocean is still substantially superior IMO. But in Blue Water's defense they have done good material such as G Gundam, ZoiRAB Chaotic Century and Mega Man X8/Command Mission while they have done some not-so good work such as the rather bland Banner of the Stars dub. And as for other areas in Canada such as Toronto and Ontario and the like are generally okay the only ones I find really commendable are the early 90's X-Men series and to a lesser extent Medabots.

But still while nothing is perfect Canada is still one of my favorite regions even if it is mainly for Ocean and I do hope that they get to appear more often sometime in the near future. But still I like all 4 of the known regions (even though Canada and California may be my favorites.)

Quick correction, the 90's X-Men series was an American production with its animation sent to Akom. The only Japanese thing about the show was that its first Japanese opening was animated by OLM (the Pokemon guys).

But yes, most Anime dubs from the Toronto Area tend to be somewhat crappy. But there are two reasons for it:

1. Most of their experience is in Pre Lay work, not post lay.
2. In the case with the Bakugan and Sailor Moon dubs, the voice actors had to work with both, pretty bland and poorly scripted material.

But there have been a few jems in the rough, Bayblade, Spider Riders and Medabots were decent, if not for a few casting choices.

But of course there are other parts of Canada in which the voice actors suck in (No one at Ocean seemed to be trying, least of all caring *and I can accept that* about Hamtaro, Transformers Armada/Energon and Gundam SEED Destiny)

There. Might as well throw in my two cents.

I was only referring to the voice acting, as it had the same voice talent as the likes of Sailor Moon, Medabots, the original Onimusha and the like. I am aware of the other info you said about the show but I was only referring to the Voice Acting.

Well, I mean, if that was was the only problem then how would any of us like anything? Example, while it took some time, most people tend to accept the Naruto and Bleach dubs even though they had been out for all that time. I mean, I see where you're coming from but I just don't think that's really a major factor when all the companies have to compete with that problem.
I totally have this problem too, except for Marc Diraison and Dan Green.

([strike]You know what's loaRAB of fun? Hearing Dan Green in an H-anime[/strike] )

Slayers seems to be the exception to the rule of "New Your dubs reminding people of 4kiRAB." Ok Slayers still reminRAB people of 4kiRAB but to a good nuraber of anime fans they have seen Slayers before most 4kiRAB dubs so it's easier to separate it.

I actually have a lot of respect for NYAV Post, from Venture Bros. to their great LA/NY productions and the Pokemon dub has stepped up in quality since they took over dub production. I'd like NYAV Post to get more work in pre-lay and post-lay in general because they are the most underrated studio out there (partially thanks to the 4kiRAB connection) and they have done a lot of superb work. If I were to make a cartoon someday I'd definitely have the voice work be done at NYAV Post because the ADR work is just amazing and the scripts rarely hit a sour note when there's dubbing.

I think that some of the anime dubs that are done in Canada are good, like Gundam 00, and while some people don't like the dub to this series, I enjoyed the dub to the 2004 Tetsujin 28 series. I don't know how accurate the dub was to the Japanese version, but I thought that the dub to Medabots was very good.

Canada can also do great voice work outside of anime, like Beast Wars.
