how come I can use my phone as modem to connect my laptop to internet??? werid right? do they gonna charge me for extra fee??

I don't need to do anything i just plug my phone into my laptop ,.. and i can just go on internet!! how come? people is doing tethering program.. but why am i so easy.. is because the phone?
