Gore doesn't usually bother me. I know it is tomato sauce and pink latex. Also, I have A-level biology and have dissected my share of rats. I'm not generally squeamish. There are certain things which push my buttons, though - mostly oral-related. For example, the boy being force-fed buttons in The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover. Relatively mild, but as I say, it pushed my buttons.
Nothing in Hostel did, not Silent Hill which I just saw last night. Nor either Saw film. I wouldn't say I enjoy it, but I don't like censorship and it can seem strange if people are in jepardy but no-one gets hurt; or if people are getting hurt but there's no blood. It starts to seem false and stagey.
I do like some of the visuals which are sometimes associated with gore. For example, the cenobites in the Hellraiser films have a kind of fascination. As did the mechanical contraptions in the Saw films - eg the jaw-breaker. I thought the monsters in Silent Hill were well concieved. Visually interesting and unlike what you see every day. Imaginative. I admire artists who can render nightmares.
And it wouldn't be right to have a nasty character like some of the ones in Silent Hill without showing the actual gore they inflict. (Trying not to be too specific here for those of you who haven't seen it.)
