Mass is a measure of quantity (how much stuff there is) and is measured in kilograms (kg). The mass of an object does not change.

Weight is a force exerted by the object and it is measured in Newtons (N). the weight of an object depends on the mass and acceleration due to gravity, so the weight of an object changes, depending on where it is.

Weight (N) = Mass (kg) x Acceleration due to gravity (m/s^2)

a) We know that the acceleration due to gravity on Earth is 9.8 m/s^2, so by rearranging the equation we can find out the original mass.

Mass (kg) = Weight (N) / Acceleration due to gravity (m/s^2)
44.0 N / 9.8 m/s^2 = 4.49 kg

b) Now that we know the mass (as it doesn't change), we can work out the weight on Io.

Weight (N) = Mass (kg) x Acceleration due to gravity (m/s^2)
4.49 kg x 1.81 m/s^2 = 8.13 N
And the mass is still 4.49 kg.
 
At the surface of Jupiter's moon Io, the acceleration due to gravity is 1.81 m/s^2. If a piece of ice weighs 44.0 N at the surface of the earth, a) what is its mass on earth's surface? b) what are its mass and weight on the surface of Io?
