Can you use river mud as top soil for a garden?

You can, but the river must be free of pollution from sewage or industrial contamination and must be a true river with fresh water, not a tidal river with brackish water.

i really wouldnt. the mud tends to have a lot of clay in it and when it dries out you will know why it was sitting at the bottom of the river. best to use mulch this fall and buy top soil in the spirng. good luck

I would ddefinitely check and see where the mud came from and what was in it first. Any sewage outflows upstream from where you will be getting it? City dumps close by? Farm fields whose fertilizer would run off and get trapped in the mud?
It might be really good if it isnt toxic.
You haul it in whatever you can carry. 5 gallons of mud could weigh a lot.
