can you use any phone you want when you are not locked in to a contract with a carrier?

I am a sprint wireless customer, and am currently not locked into a contract with them.
I just got a Blackberry curve as a gift from someone who upgraded to the Iphone at at&t.
Can I take the blackberry in to Sprint and ask that I use it instead, or is that not realistic because the phone originally came from at&t? I think the Sim card to my old phone will work in the curve too.
