Can you use any brand of oil for an oil change..and what weight for a Chevy Cobalt?

I had my oil changed about 4 weeks ago and my Change Oil Soon message has already came up on it, and I'm already confused about that as it is. When i go to get my oil changed again, can I ask for any brand of oil? And does it matter what weight i use for a 2007 Chevy Cobalt?
 
they didn't reset the oil change indicator. turn the key to run (do not start the engine) and mash the gas pedal to the floor three times real fast. that will reset the light
