Can you use a cellphone gps for trail hiking or will it only work for street driving?

Thinking of getting a new gps enabled phone and I'm wondering if I can put in coordinates for areas off the beaten path and at least get an orientation for my relative position to that location. Also wondering if I could use it to track the route I've already taken in case I need to backtrack. Will a cellphone gps do this or do I need to invest in a handheld gps?

The phone I'm thinking of getting is Sprint's Palm Pre in case that makes a difference.
