That depends on what you want to be able to do. If all you plan on doing is making and recieving calls and text messages then you do not need the BB data plan. You will not be able to do email, picture messages, ringtones, games, graphics, wallpapers, or any downloads or anything internet related. I personally do not understand anyone wanting to pay that kind of money for a BlackBerry device and then just use it as a crappy phone and not use it for what it was designed for
