...specifically the army calvary? I'm looking to possibly join the calvary in the army. My wife doesn't want me to sign if the minimum active duty requirement is 4 years active duty and 4 IRR. I was wondering if any vets or currently serving members know if you can sign a 2 by 6 or a 3 by 5 year contract? Thanks
 
a 2 Year AD contract will most likely NOT be an option. the job you select has a minimum AD commitment, period. expect that it will be 4 years..and even if you get a 3 year contract you can always be involuntarily extended anyway.
 
Yes, you can sign for less that five years. This is my second time in the Army, and when I came in this time I signed a three year contract. When I was doing my cavalry scout training, I had one or two of my buddies that signed a two year contract. So, yes, you can sign for less than four years.

Don't worry about your IRR. You will get to your ETS date and get out of the Army and more than likely won't get called up unless there is something else big that happens.

Im not sure about the Calvary but in case they will not give you a 2 yr contract consider other jobs. Infantry has a 2 yr AD contract all the time.
