can you scan photos? Like the ones you get out of a photo shop?

I want to scan photos that I took of myself. However- I am unable to decide whether or not the photo paper will scan or whether it might even cause my printer to malfunction. Is scanning photo paper safe? (Photo paper as in photos that get developed at a photo store...)
