Can you run any of The Sims games on Windows Vista?

I can't run the original because, it said internal operation failure when I tried installing it on my laptop. Pretty much not enough room.
Its funny because I had an older laptop which played it just fine, Windows XP.

I was also wondering if it would slow my computer down?
