Can you recommend a book about the history of education?

I've been reading many of David McCullough's history books lately and he makes some interesting, oblique references to education. For instance, in Theodore Roosevelt's day Harvard had mandatory chapel. He (as well as an old professor of mine) makes reference to private universities that required uniforms, perhaps similar to West Point.

I find some of these strict disciplinary requirements fascinating. It seems to me that universities were once much different than they are today. Can anyone recommend a book that covers the history of education, namely the university in America?

You need to search for a history of the university system. If you look into the history of education then you'll get a whole mess of things you didn't intend to get such as pedagogy and the history of specific subjects. You may also have better luck if you narrow it down to specific universities. I am sure the major ones should have a non-fiction book written about them.
