Can you really assign your own lots for stock sales on taxes?

I know if I buy 500 shares of XYZ in January and then buy another 500 shares in February, then start selling them in March, that I can choose which lots I'm selling.

But what if I buy 500 in January, sell 500 in February then buy 500 in December and sell those in March of the next year. Can I say I sold the January stocks in March of the next year for long term capital gains and say I short sold the 500 from February and covered that short sale in December on my taxes?
