i was just wondering if there was some software out there to do this. my phone is a z300a, also does anyone knows what data cable it uses.

I was wondering the same thing... I can't get anyone to answer anything I post... if You find out could you please let me know? I have a Z300a sony ericsson well my so does... I have a Katana which I can't get to play mp3's

Sometimes, you can trick a phone into playing mp3 ringtones by giving the file a false extension. With my phone, there is not supposed to be any support for mp3 files, but I found that by erasing the .mp3 from the end of the file and changing it to .qcp all of a sudden my phone plays high quality mp3 ringtones. Some Verizon users have reported the same result by giving their mp3 files a false .mid extension. It's worth a try, and if it doesn't work I can tell you of a program to make qcp files that seems to produce a slightly better quality than the purevoice converter (still not great).

Is that possible? I never new that! You should state that in a new thread - I can think of A LOT of people who would find that info VERY handy. By the way what does "qcp" stand for?

Sprint and other providers started using this as a format for voice memos and ringtones for some unbeknownst reason. Purevoice has horrible sound quality and it's very hard to get any decent audio out of it (it actually makes an 8bit wav sound worse than the original!).
I've mentioned the false extension trick several times, but I'm not the first on to ever figure it out. I did forget to mention though, if .qcp and .mid don't work, try other extensions your phone might play like .wav, .mmf, .aac and so on. This might not work at all for your phone model, it really depends on if the manufacturer put mp3 codecs on the phone which the provider may have later disabled in order to sell their own ringtones.

If that's the case aren't we better off with the old amr format then? I have one trick though...
let's say we have an mp3 going at 128kbps. For examples sake lets just say that converting to amr would decrease that to 32kbps (a quater). If you up the bitrate of the mp3 to 320kbps, the amr conversion of that would be playing at 80kbps. In other words you'll get better quality if you decrease a higher bitrate song to amr rather than a lower one. Remember the bitrate is really a lot lower on amr, so you wouldn't get 80kbps (neither 32 for that matter). I just used that for an example. Give it a go though.
