Can you just put any plants into a fish tank, like go to a pond or something...

...and just pull out some plants ? ive had a fish tank for like a year now, i have bought plants from my local fish store, and had a snail, i found out that the snails eat the plants (found that out the expensive way) f***ing snail wasted like £20. i was just wondering i mean i understand that the PH level in pond plants are different to fresh water fish tanks however does it really make a difference, im being a cheap motha f***er i know but im sick of spending monies on fish plants.
