Hi,

I've been given a new medication to take in addition to the Nexium. I tried looking it up in my PDR, but haven't been able to find it.
The information on the pharmacy printout is sketchy at best, with only some of the side effects and adverse reactions listed. I don't like what I've read so far. I need to read more about it before making a decision whether to take it or not. One of the listed adverse reactions is a very serious or fatal effect on the nervous system - neuroleptic malignant syndrome- in some people. :(
The name of the drug is Metoclopramide. Do any of you take it?

thank you,
flowergirl

its reglan if you goggle it you will findlots of information its to make your stoamch empty faster and for short term use only............its not a drug that most people like taking from what i have read as it has heaps of side effects.....

Thank you, Kassie. I will ask my doctor about it.

I just wanted to mention that I decided to take this medication. Wow! As promised, my everpresent nausea is gone for the first time in about a year and a half. How nice to wake up in the morning and not feel as if I need to throw up.
The downside: always feeling FULL. My appetite is gone. That may not be such a bad thing, especially right now when I am so big. I wonder if it is a side effect of the drug, or a result of my swollen stomach. Could be either, or both, but I'd bet it's the drug. Not being able to sleep through the night is another side effect of this drug I am seeing. I had insomnia from beta blockers in the past, so am no stranger to it. I still don't like finding myself awake at 1:00a.m., wondering what to do for the rest of the night.

Overall, I feel better thanks to this drug (as promised) so far.

Nessie, :)

I knew it must have had another name. This is probably why I couldn't find it in the PDR. Now I know what to look for. I'll read about it.
I took one pill last night before going to bed. It made my chest (lungs?) constricted. Both sides started to HURT. My heart started racing. There I was lying in bed, wondering what the heck I thought I was doing. :dizzy:
My instincts tell me I can live without this medication.

Flowergirl, Did you have a gastric emptying test done before being prescribed the motility drug? If not, how did your doctor decipher that slow motility was contributing to your problems?
Kassie

yip i agree unless you have extreme problems like vomiting after meals etc then forcing your body to empty food faster seems not natural.........but i dont no it maybe reglan has cured people from this deasease its so individual.......you have to decide for your self whats best and what side effects you can live with............and if it helps or not
take care ness

Nessie,

I should know more in a couple of days and will post it here. Could be my gallbladder has gone completely haywire. (I hope it's nothing worse). I don't have much pain in the gut - just a hard, hard lump about a couple of inches above the navel. Not that you can see it well due to the swelling. It can certainly be felt. That could be the hernia though, acting up because of the swelling.

Charla,

this drug has made my nausea go away (except this morning). It makes me feel full all the time (=loss of appetite). It also causes insomnia (I can live with that, have had the same with beta blockers). What were your symptoms?

Thank you both for your input.

Kasssie,

I had no such test. I just had three ultrasounRAB this morning though. My stomach is huge. The med was given to ease my reflux, stomach and other (nausea) symptoms which started to get pretty bad. I had an abdominal, pelvic & v. ultrasounRAB. Hopefully, they will shed some light on the situation. My reflux has gone crazy during all this. This drug has helped a lot already. My much worsened nausea is completely gone now. Even though the relief I feel now may only be temporary, I feel normal again after so many months of daily nausea. I want to feel like this ALL THE TIME!!!! :) :) :)

question what are your symtpoms that relate to slow gastric empting..

like i no neuasea which is what i have

but what severe stomach pain after eating like dull ache, stabbing, piercing
did you have any of this?

i have chronic stomach pains at the moment, getting worse, trying to work out cause, like can gerd cause this?. thinking slow empting or my gallbladder which has shown up with gallstones, scarring etc.

let us no how your tests went
cheers ness

Reglan can have severe side effects -- depression being one of the most reported. There is another motility drug that works on the same premise but has far fewer side effects. It is called domperidone. I don't believe it's available in the States, but it is available by prescription in Canada.

Flowergirl,

I think when I didn't know what it could cause that I was ok with it. LOL. I took mine at night and it put me right to sleep! I noticed that it made me feel like my head wouldn't feel so stopped up or my ears. That was a great feeling! You know the feeling of being all stuffy in the head. But, during the day, I would be zorabie like and I developed tics or things like moving my tongue around or clinching my teeth all the time. I must admit that I did get much better when I began the first round of previcid, reglan and carafate. Did help my stomach a lot but after my motility test came back not so bad, the Dr. took me off of it. If I get real, real sick, I'll go back on it for a bit (with all others full force) but I better be in the bed when I first start taking it!
I'm surprised that you haven't had any reactions since so many people do, but I'm just glad it's helping you! I did finally get used to it a little better but I felt in slow motion all the time and worried about me moving my mouth around all the time! Really goofy looking, you know. I liked Propulsid (sp) much better but of course they took it off the market for some reason. It was a motility drug too. I haven't had to eat crackers for the last 2 days. Yeah me!

FlowerGirl,

I took Reglan in the beginning and it seemed to help get me better but the side effects were bad for me. I was like a zorabie even after taking for awhile. I was alarmed about the serious side effects also but I've heard many people get great results with it and they give it to babies all the time. Anything would beat those crackers in the morn to get up and dressed. Best of luck to you!

Charla, :)

I think the relief that taking this drug results in is a corabination of things. It probably relieves a bunch of symptoms, some of which are more obvious than others. I am glad for whatever relief I can get in any way I can get it.:D I do not regret taking it, however briefly. I'll make sure to mention how much it's helped relieve the symptoms to my doctor, in hopes I can stay on it for a while.

I am curious on one hand, and afraid on the other, to learn what might be causing my current problems. Because we are humans and it is our nature to always imagine the worst, we do. I wish I could go back in time about three years or so. Then I could just go about my life the way I used to, like everybody else. I guess these things aren't possible for some of us. Sorry to hear you haven't had much relief from your symptoms. I thought you were doing so much better...because of your getting your voice back. Mine is still hoarse. I really don't care about that right now. I am glad you have such an understanding boss and husband. That sure helps! I took some time off work until this clears up. I hate looking the way I do now. Oh well. Thanks for your post. Hats off to your boss and hubby....:bouncing:

I now know what one of the problems is. I don't just have one hernia, I have two. One is the hiatal type, the other the bulging type. They seem to be pretty close together. No wonder my stomach has been acting up. It will have to be fixed. Maybe I should ask if they could repair both while they are at it. Just a thought. :)
