literature (I believe) short stories? I read these when I was in middle school (sixth grade).
Story one: A man is on a ship and night after night sleeps in the bottom bunk in his room. Curtains close off the bunk right above him. One night he gets the courage to open it and... etc. I can't seem to remember what happens after this. A slimy ghost, I think?
Story two: Involves the earth after "the end of the world," but you don't figure this out til the very end. A man goes across the river and into the sacred lands where his elders tell him not to go. He adventures around the land and finds inscriptions of national monuments.
Story three: A man stays at a hotel/motel owned by an elderly lady, and signs his name on a guest book. He notices that there are sign-in times next to all the names above his, but there are not sign-out times. He notices a dog on the carpet in front of the fireplace. Can't remember the rest, until the end when he realizes the dog is actually stuffed, and the old lady plans on making him "stay" as well.
Any leads or ideas would be very appreciated!
