Me and my ex got in a fight one night. I dont want to talk to the police or press any charges against him. They said they can put me in jail for not talking to them. If I do he can go to prison and I dont want that. What can I do to keep him out of prison?

They can't put you in jail unless they Subpoena you, if they said they'll send you to jail that's illegal.

They can't throw you in jail just for not pressing charges against him. That's just an empty threat in order to scare you into complying. However, if he's charged with something serious and they have reason to believe you know something, then they can charge you with obstruction of justice and you will go to prison if it's true and you're convicted.

It is not a crime to refuse to talk to the police in the US. It is your right under the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution. If they want to arrest you? Fine. They can arrest you. That is their right and sometimes their duty. But if you speak with the police without first talking to a lawyer, you risk (1) being misunderstood (2) making an unwitting "false" confession or (3) making erroneously incriminating statements. If you do not talk to the police when they ask, they may decide that you are guilty of something and badger you about it. But they are not the judge and jury. Save your statements for the courtroom if it comes to that.

No... run back into your trailer and pile some of that trash and debris in front of the door.
