Can you go to jail for kicking out your 13 year old son?

My friend who's 13 years old got kicked out today bcuz we were having a water fight and his house was one of the bases. His dad literally grabbed him by the throat and cussed him out. His dad is basically psycho, he seems normal to me, but he was cusses like heck and stuff. His grandma lives in the same area so he is going to live with them. He doesn't want people to call the cops because he thinks he will have to live with his parents and he never wants to again after what they did. I want to help in anyway possible, so what can I do and what should I do?
 
Yes. It's worse if you attack a minor, regardless if he or she is your child or not. Since when in the history of mankind was kicking your child a form of discipline?
