Can you give me any tips on starting and maintaining a vegtable garden?

I'm a rookie at gardening and I'm trying to get any tips you have to offer, the more knowledge the better.
I'm planting: Carrots, cucumbers, peas, green beans, squash and cantalope.
I have some compost to put in my soil also
 
I have a successful garden in Michigan.
1) I Mulch the leaves in fall and bag them.
2) In spring put them in the garden and turn the soil upside down using a garden hoe. Then go to city's dumping place and get compost and throw that in the garden. You will get a good harvest. This is purely organic.
 
First pick a spot that gets sunshine most of the day.
It should also be well drained, not wet, but not too dry either.
The soil should be well balanced; sandy loam not clay, with humus.
Compost worked into the soil will help.
Follow the planting directions on the seed packets, or seedlings.
Carrots tend to grow too close together, mix with radishes.
Leave lots of space for cucumbers, squash, & cantalope; they spread.
Peas can be started early, they like the cold.
Stagger your planting times, or everything will come in at once.
 
make plenty of space between each plant. put up tall chicken wire (can be found at a gardening center, or even a store) and water it with water and make sure it gets plenty of sun. when you water it, give it a good amount of water, but dont flood it. you could kill the plants. also, when you plant the canalopes, makes sure theres extra room between each seed becase they will tangle eachother up. good luck!
 
1. Get a soil testing kit instead of guessing what your soil needs.

2. Use gardening forums and books when you can.

3. Plant less plants than you think you need and work up from there.

4. Raised beds are awesome.
