Can you get around verizon's requirement of a data plan?

I love all of verizon's 3g smartphones but all of them have to have a $30 a month data plan. My problem is that i have unlimited texting (which is $20 a month) coupled with my family's shared plan (its like $100 i think) and im wondering if that qualifies for the $30 requirement? Or does data plan mean you have to have internet service come with it?
 
The data plan is just that, it is for data. Data = Internet. You have to pay an extra $30 a month for the internet access for all Smartphones. This is becoming a reality with almost all service providers now
