Can you get a cash penalty for running a red light on a cycle bike (UK)?

I received £30 that apparently needs to be paid.

I was at a junction, all lights were red because of the green man showing.

Apparently there was a cop van somewhere, which caught up with me 3 blocks away.

Was I in the wrong? Does it need to be paid? On this paper he gave me, it says all stuff about needing to give evidence of license and stuff.

I was on push bike, so, do you think I can challenge it?
The cops weren't really that bad about it.

They flagged me down, and gave me the penalty that way, they didn't know my address.

Nd I don't run red lights when there is green lights opposite, I did say that I only ran it cause there was green man on crossing, and it was simpler just to cut across instead of going on path.
 
Try reading the Highway Code-it DOES apply to cyclists.
My only query is-how did they get your address? Bicycles have no registration number, and you don't require a license.
 
Its true, you can be charged, my brother was on the phone whilst riding a bike on the road, and sure anoth he was pulled over by police..!!
 
Yes. Also, if you ride a bike drunk and hold a car licence, you can get points on it for doing that !!

If you got off, pushed it through the red light, then got back on, you would have been fine.

In my day, you weren't even allowed to cycle on paths.

I take it they flagged you down and gave you the fixed penalty. It's a case of more income for the police and achieving targets. Discretion is out of the window these days.
 
yes you have to obey the rules of the road , so if you take that chance of running a red light and you get a fine thank your lucky stars that is all you get , if a car had been coming the other way you could have been killed , pay up
