Can you fix a flash-drive Windows has declared "corrupt and unreadable" without...

...deleting the files? Today at school, I started writing a short story that I've been trying to get down for some time. When I got home, I plugged in the flash-drive I'd saved it on so I could work on it. The computer did not recognize that I'd plugged it in, so I pulled it out and popped it in again.

It recognized it this time, but couldn't read it and suggested scanning and fixing. I did this, but after it got to a certain point nothing happened for several minutes, so I canceled and moved the flash-drive to a different computer. This computer could read it, but the majority of my files weren't on there. Now all the computers are showing it to be "corrupt and unreadable" and suggest formatting it. I know that this will erase anything left.

Is there a way to make it readable without losing everything on it? Is there a way to recover the files that had been lost during the first attempted fix?

(Yes, I'm the same person who had the messed-up tablet yesterday. These are the first really big problems I've had with this computer.)
