"I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." I never could get a handle on how exactly that was racist. For those of you who feel it's racist could you please explain why you feel that way.
When I read it I felt I completely understood what she meant. I mean say you have a latina judge who grew up in a tough neighborhood much like Sotomayor did and then you have a white judge who did not grow up in that kind of area. Both judges have two juveniles brought in front of them accused of assault and battery and they come from bad neighborhoods. More often then not a white judge who doesn't understand what it's like to come up in a neighborhood like that and can't relate to the youth would just sentence them and punish them... pushing them further down the path of hardened criminal. And then you have the latina judge who knows what it's like to grow up that way and gives the youth a second chance because she can relate and know when you live in those neighborhoods alot of the time you don't get second chances and sometimes that's all a youth needs to inspire them to be better. When I heard this comment this is what I first thought of.
