Can you connect car subs to a home stereo without an external amp?

I have 2 car subs I received as a gift. But I don't own a car and they're taking up space in my room. I have a regular sony stereo sitting in my room that I use a lot of the time. and I could use some deep bass. so can I just hook them to the subwoofer jack on my stereo? Or do I have to buy a PSU and my car amp to do it?
