Can you build a speaker box?

I have a pickup truck with bench seats in the back so i have a limited amount of space. So i would need to build my own speaker box.

Heres my question when you build a box to you need to use fabric on it or is that just for show? Also can you put 2 6x9 and 2 8 inch subs in the same speaker box and not loos sound quality?
 
I'd make the box for the 8" subs (with their own individual chamber w/ correct airspace) with extra clearance on the sides for 6x9 holes and then box in the backside of the 6x9's last.

fabric can help protect the box but it is entirely personal preference.
 
yes u can do it, but u have to be a professional 2 build boxes that way. here's what u should do. make ur 8inch box for ur subs then make ur 6x9 box and just glue or screw the 6x9 boxes to ur subwoofer box so its all 2gether
