Today is day 10 and quite a lot of proud flesh is forming. I have attached pictures of my horse's wound on the front of his hock, just at the bottom of the joint. First pic is day 2, pics 2 and 3 are day 9 which was yesterday. Horse is now slightly lame in trot but wasn't until 2 days ago although I wasn't trotting him before now to check, he's fine in walk.
The black around the the wound in the latter pics is stockholm tar - my vet advised me not to wrap it as I'd end up damaging the hock itself and he said to apply stockholm tar with wound powder (mostly charcoal) to form a barrier instead, I hosed off the cut for these photos. I do not know how he did it whatsoever, I cannot find any barbed wire or anything he might have done it with. He had a tetanus shot last month so this shouldn't be a worry at all.
I injected him with penicillin (pen strep) for 5 days as advised by the vet. The vet told me not to wash it, just to apply the tar and wound powder twice a day, but proud flesh is forming and I need to know what to do. The horse is in the field, when I put him in the stable his leg swelled quite a bit, it went down once he was put out in the paddock. He walks and sometimes has a short trot but no bucking or galloping. Still quite a lot of yellow pus coming out of the centre of the wound. Horse is 9 and is an irish sport horse, mostly TB. Many thanks in advance!
We don't have wonder dust here in Ireland but my vet did say he'd use copper sulphate which is a pretty crude and outdated method of proud flesh removal from what I've read.
Another question is when will it be safe to ride him - when the wound has been fully scabbed over for a few weeks? If there is no chipped bone or debris and he heals as normal how long will it roughly be? If it's more than a couple of months I will lease another horse to ride while I care for this guy.
