Can we sue a lawyer for not doing his job right?

My family and I have lived in Canada for a few years, my parents had a work visa and I was dependent of them. My parents decided to hire a lawyer to do all the documentation for Permanent Residency for the three of us. After all the monthly payments were done, the lawyer sent the application form in November. After a few months after the application was sent, we started to wonder why we weren't getting a response and the lawyer couldn't give us an answer why. I started to look through the citizenship and immigration Canada website and found out that Canada sent a response back in the month on January (to the lawyer's address) , which needed to be responded back within 3 months, otherwise the application would be canceled. When we told the lawyer about it, he pretty much said he never received the answer and tried to fix it as quick as he could BUT while charging us still, even though my parents were finished with the payments.

So my question is: could we sue the lawyer for the extra payments? We paid him all the money he asked for before Canada's response was sent, but after he realized we had to do it all over again, he decided to keep charging even though it was his fault we didn't receive the response. The response was sent to the lawyer, so my parents were not worried about it. If the response was sent to my parents, I would understand why it would be our fault for not paying attention, but it was sent to the lawyer because that is what my parents paid him for, to do and take care of all the documentation, while my parents provided with the necessary documents and payments.
