can virgin media do this?

i've been with virgin media for nearly 6 weeks and i've received 2 bills which add up to over 300 pound, now ive been on the phone saying i wish to cancel my calls and broadband with them and they said no and that they want me to pay them 900 pound as im in contract for 12 months. they have also said that bt has cancelled my order but i've also spoken to bt who say the order is going through. but can they do this even though i haven't signed a contract?
 
The contract part they can do. If you're using your phone that much, it'd be cheaper to keep the contract but get another cheap phone plus an unlimited plan. 300 pounds is a lot for 6 weeks.
