Like most mental illnesses, PTSD does not show up on X-rays, CT scans, or blood tests. There is no simple test for PTSD. An experienced professional can diagnose it in a patient using information from his/her history, interviews, and examinations.

Can someone have it and hide it? Maybe, if she/he lies to the doctor. That just delays getting treatment, and it can get worse during that time and cause the person much more distress and misery.
