I just heard one of my co-workers today say that, after she disputed a $15 late fee for a DVD rental from a red box, a local police officer showed up at her door and gave her a $200+ ticket for retail theft, even though she had returned the DVD. She was told that if she tried to dispute that ticket she could face criminal charges.
Is this actually legal/legit in the U.S. now, or is this an example of gross abuse of power on the part of both the company and law enforcement? I would have thought the most they could do was file a civil suit against her and report her to a credit bureau.
