Can the door latch on a Chevy Blazer be fixed at home?

I went out to the garage & got in the Blazer, but when I shut the door it just bounced back open again. Now I have a slight idea of how the latch works, so I worked the handle and had a screwdriver in the door, trying to make it work. The "catch" part that's in the door itself isn't budging, and the worst part is that when I tried to shut the door, I'm pretty sure I heard something fall along the inside part of the door. Also, the automatic lock will not lock/unlock the drivers side door now, though it does control the other three.

I'm fairly certain that I'm going to have to replace the whole latch mechanism, which requires opening up the door and finding replacement parts. Does anyone who's done this before know if that is something that can be fairly easily done at home, or should I just take it into a mechanic? I hate going to mechanics, because they see a woman who doesn't know much (I do have SOME knowledge) about cars and start seeing dollar signs.
