Can the 37yo son of a Vietnam Vet receive any benefits from the vet's death?

Military, SocSec, doesn't matter.? My father died a homeless man 8 or 9 years back and I've recently taken up a passing interest in his life. He was never involved in my life.

Anyway, while doing some research about his military career, I'm guessing there must have been some benefits (his pension maybe) that were never paid to him because of his homeless status. I, his only next of kin, certainly did not receive anything from him or the military ever.

I realize I'm more than likely not entitled to anything at 37yo, but I wondered if I could claim any of the unpaid benefits he must have. Even if it's not directly monetary...housing or education assistance perhaps? Do any other government agencies owe him anything I could claim as his next of kin?

Just trying to make the best out of an otherwise crappy situation in my life. Maybe his death could provide some benefit to the granddaughter he never knew.
