Can T mobile charge me for the entire month even if I discontinued service?

Can T mobile charge me for the entire month even if I discontinued service? I have been charged for the entire month even though I had used the service for just three days. My contract was up and I ported to a new service provider but I did this after the new billing cycle had begun. So I ended up using it for three days but got charged for the entire month. Is this correct? Can they do this?
