become a sniper? i know that you can become a sniper but im not sure how long it takes and if its a rare opportunity and all that sort of stuff..
and im not one of those people who play video games and sniper and therefore because im good at sniping in a game it makes me good in real life because i've snipered before and know how it is

The Australian Army does not have a sniper role per se like the U.S Marines or R.M Commandos have however there are elements of sniper skilled personnel amongst the ranks of the Infantry and assault (Lighthorse) battalions.

Every year there is a military shooting contest for the 'crossed rifles" and these blokes are good shots. if you get a crossed rifles patch you are allowed to where it on your shoulder.

That identifies you as a good shot but not necessarily a sniper quality soldier.

The standard weapon of the infantry is the Austeyr which is fires a 55 NATO round in auto or single shot , clip is 30 rounds. this is the regular small arm of the Australian army.It is a good weapon but not ideal for sniping.

The SASR has sharpshooters and skilled weapons specialists but you need to be assessed and pass a very thorough and rigorous training course to be accepted , and that is usually after you have at least 2 years minimum under your belt in the forces.

Sniping is more than being able to shoot a rifle, it requires a special self discipline and mental attitude.

i am no sniper but here is what i know, you join the army as a riflemen and get assigned to your battalion. You can then apply for the recon or sniper course. You will only be allowed to apply if there are vacancies, so you could have to wait a while to get on to the course. If you become a sniper you will be on rotation and spend a portion of your time being a sniper and the other being a rifleman as it is quite a stressful job etc. They will train you to snipe it does not matter if you have any prior sniping experience, they prefer it you do things their way. You can also do sniping in special forces, but you have to get in to special forces first.

Remember you won't be killing a cartoon/video character but real humans. Make enquires at defencejobs.com.au You will need to meet the criteria and complete training first. You could also join the army reserve, I think there is a programe for as young as about 16 & 9months old. defencejobs.com.au/army/reserve

Many put their hand up but few are chosen. You can offer, and then undergo a strenuous test/training period. There are requirements on a sniper way over and above the ability to shoot straight, with individual temperament being a major one. Snipers have to be able to operate independently, often alone and with little direct support or protection, and, even beyond all that, it takes a very special type of person to do this kind of work and not crack up. A good reference is US Colonel David Hackworth's 'Steel My Soldiers Hearts' where he deals with his snipers.
Oh, if you can stand or lie without moving at all for ten hours or more, which they will assuredly make you do, can stand even your own company mates looking at you like a murderer, and can (don't laugh) literally get inside your oppo's head, it helps.
Don't pay much attention to movies and stuff - that will get you killed. And no - I was not a sniper and had no wish to be one.
