Can Someone Verify This?

I'm switching my blackberry to Data only and getting free service with another provider. I remember on my 8100 using OS 4.2 AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, those all used SMS.

Well on the 8120 running 4.3, doesn't the Instant Messengers use data instead? I got a free LG CU515 and i can't stand this keypad for texting, I'm hoping to still bust out IM's using my blackberryy data.

Look for any AIM programs that use data only, such as JiveTalk, Ramble IM, and one more that I can't think of...I think it's called IM+ buddy or something like that. Third party programs are your best bet.

No I have a data plan, I'm changing to data only and I'm trying to find out if the Instant Messengers on the new Pearls (using 4.3 OS) use data or SMS.

Someone a while back told me the new operating systems use data instead of SMS for their Instant Messengers and I just need to verify that.

im pretty sure they didnt take a step backwards....my 8320 used data on the IM programs that came factory installed...it was the old OZ messenger on the 8100 that used sms....everything else should be data...

Youre absolutely right!!! the 8100 IM service did use sms. That has since changed with the 8120. It is strictly data now.

TMO and RIM are trying to get all the "bling" customers that by the 8120 to get a data plan. TMO lost out on the 8100 because sms is standard on any phone so people using IM were able to use the unlimited messaging plans that were meant for sms.

Personally I think that it's a good thing because the OZ messenger always fouled up. 4.3 s/w does work better.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~ well I don't know what the problem is. Switched to data only 2 days ago and can't log into aim or msnm, but I can get into Yahoo just fine. Any suggestions?

Where does the phone "hang-up" when trying to get onto Aim or Msn? Specifically does aim get stuck at about 20%?

If so, try enabling your firewall and reset the firewall to default. Then pull the battery while it's still on. Replace the battery after a few seconds. When the phone comes back on it should ask a bunch of questions asking you to allow IM to act as a server. Say "allow" to everything, then try and log in again.

This helped me out alot and got me up and going on AIM. If your still having issues signing on then delete the event log (hold ALT and type L,G,L,G) then menu to delete. Pull the battery after doing this.

Hope this helps out!!

Yeah it didn't work!

Activated my firewall, reset to default, battery pulled and the only thing that happened was it asked me to allow Weather Eye and nothing else. Cleared the Event Log and nothing works, This is the message I keep getting for MSN and AIM (BTW, Yahoo works just fine!):

Connection Error (65):
Problem
receiving data
from the
server.

OK

What carrier do you use? With t-mobile that error 65 usually has to have a trouble ticket filed with the engineering department. Long process takes about 30 minutes on the phone with a rep and then a day or two to hear back from engineering.

The fact that you can get onto Yahoo, and I assume internet browsing, shows that the issue is specific to your line of service and not necessarily the device.
