Can someone tell me as to why I think weird things just before I fall asleep?

Sorry, this may be long, but I'd like for you to read & give me your answers/thoughts.

Ok, so for the past 2 weeks or so, I've noticed that while I'm laying in bed with my eyes closed, just about to fall asleep, I start to think weird, odd things. Of course, when I first get into bed, like everyone else, I go over the day or week and think of the next day and planned events, etc. But, I noticed that after thinking the normal thoughts, my brain will wonder unguided and think of the weirdest, sometimes surreal things.
I've found myself thinking, or playing out scenes in my head, where I play both parts. In my head I'll say one thing as one person, then switch to the opposite person and reply with their answer. Usually what I... think is nonsense.
Also, just last night when this happened, i remember having these little symbols flow into my eyes... or eyelids. Just like we see random shapes and flashes of color when we close our eyes, I seen actual objects. Like, for instance, a teddy bear or a cookie. And, I'm awake during this. How do i know i'm awake? Well, once i realize what I'm seeing/thinking i suddenly think, "what the hell?" Then i'd go back into it.
I've started asking, not myself, but something in my head questions. Just dumb questions before i fall asleep while all this goes on. Questions like, "Does so&so hate so&so?" and I will make myself not answer, and I'll lay there waiting for an answer. and out of nowhere, unplanned will come the answer. I hear it in my head.

Does anyone else experience stuff like this?
Is there a name to this kind of thing?

It's not that I've become to hate it,
it's just that I'm really amazed by it.
