student, also do travel photography...? I have an absolute maximum of £500 for it but would prefer obviously to spend £200-£300
Just need an idea, there are so many cameras out there!

You're really going to struggle to find one at around 200, but you can get a Nikon D40 for around 300. However, lenses cost money.

If you're okay with starting out with one -- MAYBE TWO -- standard lenses and slowly building your collection of lenses and other accessories, you can get the D40 around that price.

If you go towards the higher end of your budget, you can either get a D40 and more lenses to go with it, or a D60 -- slightly better than a D40 -- with a lens or two and the other basics.

The Nikon D5000 and D7000 are also in your price range.

Sorry all I could offer is Nikon solutions; I'm not significantly familiar with many other brands and I know most about the pricing on Nikon models.

Oh, and also -- don't be too afraid of refurbs. A lot of people worry about them, but I've known a few people that went with cameras that were used and refurbished by the manufacturer, and none of them have had any significant long-term problems. There are usually some small scratches and other minor cosmetic flaws, but they go over the insides pretty well -- only one friend had a problem with it, and they sent her a replacement within a week.

Obviously, refurbs are a little cheaper than new models, and they are a pretty good choice for those on a budget who are okay with it not being perfect cosmetically.

Likewise, buying used privately -- from someone on your area perhaps from Craigslist or local ads -- can have its benefits. Prices are generally significantly cheaper than the new or refurb price, but the system's not perfect -- chances are, you won't get all of the accessories that originally came with the camera, and it's less likely to be in stellar condition inside because the company didn't review the product and refurbish it. But, if you go over the camera and ask plenty of questions -- and find a good seller -- it can be worth the sacrifice of a shiny new toy.

Good luck and happy shooting!
