The two most obvious periods would be:
1) the mid-1950s through the 1970s, when African-Americans (Blacks) and women gained many civil rights, from Brown vs. the Board of Education (desegregation) to Roe v. Wade (abortion);
2) the past decade, since 2001, when fear of terrorism enabled the Government to limit freedoms, rights and civil liberties (Homeland Security, travel restrictions, embedded media).
