Can someone please explain to me why NASCAR is so popular?

I've been wondering for quite a while now, why so many people gather around a single track to watch race cars travel hundreds of laps, guzzling hundreds of gallons of valuable fuel...

Is it the atmosphere of the track? Or are most of the people there just race car junkies or something?
No disrespect to NASCAR, one of the most popular sports in the US
 
It is an all American sport, Those that go have their favorite drivers that they follow...It is the only sport I know that has a religious person pray before it starts, they get a fly over by Military jets, and they have a singer sing the National Anthem. Which means they support God, the Military and the Country. The races are exciting,the atmosphere great as well. They tailgate just like football. You should go to a race...you will be amazed.
 
I have always pondered this as well... it has never made any sense. In the wise words of Jeff Dunham's puppet Bubba J, "They're making another left turn!!! And another left turn!!!" I am and PROUD American and I was raised in the West in a "hick" town, but I still never thought it was worth watching. Just like the rodeo... it's almost like everyone goes hoping and expecting for someone to get hurt. Twisted! Now football... that is the greatest and most entertaining sport ever made!!
 
well alot of people like the thrill of high speeds on slick tracks just inches apart
i mean if that doesnt get you going i don't know what will lol
 
I was raised with a family of racing. I even drove power puff for women. It was fun and exciting. Try watching it and you can get into it.
You'll get to know the drivers and crew.

You put a certain person to win or get up in the top 10 and cheer like hell. It's the excitement of watching them go round and round.
More excitement when a crash comes, with no one hurt.

Then towards the end of race you will be on the edge of your seat cheering on the best man/women to win. Just sit down and get into it as we even get into betting who will win and who will crash.

In the summer we go to local races and may go out of town to a few.
My Man and I watch them on T.V. and do the same thing.
It's excitement and a hobby, you may enjoy. Once you really understand the race.
