can someone help me with the windown media player?

i restarted my computer and every thing deleted now i have new videos that i just imported but my computer wont let me watch them every time i try to play a video it keeps saying Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. i dont no what im pose to do it keeps saying close after that its the only choice i have what do i do to watch my videos
