Can someone help me with the pre-calc problem?

If I have the parabola equation: y² - 2y - 8x - 31 = 0 and I put it in standard form: (y-1)² = 8(x+4) and then have to graph it. How do they get:

a=2
vertex: (-4, 1)
foci: (-2, 1)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
