hello! I'm participating in my school's interclass debate soon (I haven't been given the exact date) and could someone give me good debate tips for preparing for a debate and during a debate.
Please help! Thanks a lot! :D

1. Make a list of all the key points you would like to make throughout your argument.

2. Make a list of possible problems with your OWN points, things that the opposition may pick up on.

3. Work out counter-arguments for these problems. For example, things you can say that will counteract your oppositions problem's with your original points.

4. Keep this list with you throughout the debate to refer to (if this is allowed in your debate)

5. Stay calm and always speak clearly, stuttering and nervousness gives the impression that you are losing the debate.

6. Finally, if you believe in what you are debating, you will be fine.

THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS ARE 2 & 3!! If you know the problems with your own argument, you are more equipped to answer your opposition when they (no doubt about it) bring these problems up, making you the better debater!

Good luck, and I hope this helps you :D

1. Study, study, study about the subject you are going to debate about. Be WELL informed, not only about your argument, but about what the opposition's argument might be.

2. ALWAYS be calm, practice being eloquent, NEVER lose your temper. Shouting does not make you right.

3. Don't attack your opponent, & DON'T react if they attack you personally. It will make THEM look bad.

If I can think of anything else, I'll add it.

Edit: Naomi, below, knows what she's talking about.
